Do Calories in Almonds Outweigh their Health Benefits?

Mar 9

Almonds: A High Fat Food that is good for your Health?

The calories in almonds are 500 to a half cup. How can this little nut be good for you?

Although nuts are known to provide a variety of cardio-protective benefits, many avoid them for fear of weight gain. However, almonds (and nuts in general) have been found to lower the risk of weight gain!

Almonds contain high amounts of heart healthy monounsaturated fats and vitamin E and are well known to reduce LDL cholesterol level, as well as to reduce the risk for heart disease. LDL cholesterol has been linked to heart disease and atherosclerosis.

Additionally, a quarter cup of almonds also contains 99 mg of magnesium and 257 mg of potassium. Magnesium improves the flow of blood, nutrients and oxygen throughout the body and potassium is essential in maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. Almonds are also known to protect against Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease by reducing spikes in blood sugar levels after meals. To lower your risk of heart disease, have a handful of almonds at least four times a week.

With these health-essential ingredients the health benefits far outweigh the calories in almonds.

All about Almonds

The Almond (Prunus dulcis, syn. Prunus amygdalus Batsch., Amygdalus communis L., Amygdalus dulcis Mill.) is a species of tree of the genus Prunus, belonging to the subfamily Prunoideae of the family Rosaceae and native to the Middle East. Within Prunus, it is classified in the subgenus Amygdalus, distinguished from the other subgenera by the corrugated seed shell.

Almond is also the name of the edible and widely cultivated seed of this tree. Although popularly referred to as a nut, the almond seed or fruit is botanically not a true nut, but the seed of a drupe (a botanic name for a type of fruit).

Enjoy your Almonds in many Ways!

Almonds are not just a between-meal snack

  • Spread some almond butter on your toast or down the center of a piece of celery
  • Add a handful of roasted almonds to a salad
  • Finely chop almonds and use them as a topping for pasta or steamed vegetables
  • Also add chopped almonds to plain yogurt
  • Pair with an apple for a healthy snack

To prepare chopped almonds, grind by hand or pulse them in a food processor. If you want to remove the skin (although almonds are healthier with the skin intact) simply blanch the nuts for a few minutes, rinse and the skin should come right off when pinching the almonds.

If you want to roast your own almonds, place almonds on a cookie sheet and roast for about 20 minutes in a 165 degree (Fahrenheit) oven.

Those eating almonds also experienced a 62% greater reduction in their weight/BMI (body mass index), 50% greater reduction in waist circumference, and 56% greater reduction in body fat compared to those on the low calorie high carbohydrate diet!

Another study published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that despite the high calories in almonds, the actually promote eating healthier. While eating almonds in their diets, study participants’ intake of health-promoting monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber, vegetable protein, vitamin E, copper and magnesium significantly increased. At the same time, their intake of trans-fatty acids, animal protein, sodium, cholesterol and sugars significantly decreased.

Toddler Cough Remedies

Mar 8

There are almost 10 to 15% toddlers who suffer from chronic coughing due to a variety of reasons such as asthma, allergies and reflux from acid. It is extremely important to take a toddler to a physician if the toddler has been coughing for 10 weeks or longer. Gastroesophageal reflux disease is one of the most common causes of chronic cough in toddlers. Similarly even allergy and asthma are the most common causes of chronic cough affecting at least 5% of all toddlers.

Chronic cough in toddlers is not considered to be productive since it does not produce any gunk resulting from congestion in the throat. Treating chronic cough in toddlers can take almost 8 weeks since the treatment can begin only after the physician is completely sure that all the causes of chronic cough in the particular toddler have been identified. This is because at least 2 to 3% of all the toddlers with chronic cough simply cough out of the habit and the reason for coughing cannot be attributed to any other cause such as allergies or asthma.

Allergies in a toddler can occur almost at any time of the year and are usually seen during the spring and the fall season. Hence if a toddler is coughing during the spring fall season it is essential to get the toddler checked by a physician to determine if the toddler is suffering from any allergies. Similarly several environmental factors such as smoking near the child can cause chronic cough in toddlers.

Asthma in toddlers does not cause any wheezing and instead this respiratory disease manifests itself in the form of a chronic cough. Hence if your toddler has been coughing for eight weeks or more without any wheezing you must still visit the physician to determine whether your toddler is suffering from asthma. Often a bad cold can also be a cause of chronic cough in toddlers since the treatment of a bad cold involves the use of postnasal drips which usually remain at the back of the throat of the toddler causing the chronic coughing. Hence if your toddler has been suffering from a bad cold and the coughing refuses to go then it is best to consult a physician to ensure that this side-effect of the postnasal drops is eliminated.

More often than not coughing in toddlers is a form of habit and hence the toddlers continue coughing simply out of habit. To treat habitual coughing it is best to direct the attention and energy of the toddler into some other activity since no other treatment or toddler cough remedies will work on habitual coughing. It is also not correct to say that the toddler is coughing on purpose and instead it is a habit which has manifested itself in the toddler and it is something that the toddler has not chosen to do.

While wondering about the different cough remedies there are certain natural remedies which can provide relief from chronic or acute coughing in children. Popsicles are one of the most common toddler cough remedy used by mothers to provide relief to the children from coughing. There are certain low-sugar popsicles available which can numb the nerves in the throat of the child which usually trigger the coughing and it can also be a low-tech approach to treating chronic coughing in your child without having to worry about any potential side effects or overdoses.

Similarly even ice cream is considered to be one of the most popular remedies by mothers. Ice cream also works in a way very similar to popsicles and numbs the nerves in the throat of the child which triggers the coughing. Like ice cream and popsicles you can also use sherbet with which is low fat and almost always dairy free to control the chronic coughing in your child. Sherbet is considered to be more effective in comparison to ice cream or popsicles since it consists of a creamy texture which travels very slowly down the food pipe into the stomach and providing much more time to the cold sensation to penetrate the inflamed nerves at the throat of the child and to subsequently numb the nerves.

For mothers who do not wish to use cold remedies to get rid of a cough they can use yoghurt smoothies or plain yoghurt. The yoghurt smoothies or plain yoghurt are not as cold as popsicles or ice cream and can provide a great coating on the irritated nerves in the throat of your child. It is a common misconception that the milk contained in the yoghurt smoothies or plain yoghurt begets mucus but there have been no scientific studies to back up this belief. Unless your child suffers from lactose intolerance plain yoghurt or yoghurt smoothies are one of the best toddler cough remedies available.

Using a cool mist humidifier in the room of your child can also help reduce the chronic coughing in your child. Wet air reduces the instances of the throat of your child from drying out thus preventing dry throats which are often the cause of chronic coughing in children. The cool air created by the cool mist humidifier will also make it easier for your child to breathe and hence installing a cool mist humidifier in your child’s room is a must if your child has been suffering from chronic coughing for over eight weeks.

Most physicians consider accumulation of postnasal drip at the back of the throat of a child as one of the causes of chronic coughing in children. Hence if your child is suffering from a bad cold and you wish to prevent the chronic coughing from continuing even after the cold has been treated, it is advised to make your child sit up straight as you administer the postnasal drop. The upright position of your child will prevent the postnasal drop accumulating at the back of the throat and will thus prevent chronic coughing in your child.

Administering vitamins to the toddlers is also among the best toddler cough remedies since the vitamins can boost the immune system of your child and help your child fight out the infection and shorten the duration of the chronic coughing. In case your child has already been suffering from chronic coughing for at least one or two weeks it is the best time to start administering vitamins to your child. Vitamins such as vitamins C and vitamin D3 can not only prevent the prolongation of chronic coughing but can also prevent any bouts of coughing in the future.

Similarly you can also increase the quantity of blueberries in the daily diet of your child since blueberries are full of bioflavonoids which help strengthen the immune system of children. The bioflavonoids in the blueberries also protect the cells from germ invasion during the course of infection. Thus not only will the duration of chronic coughing be reduced in your child but the severity of the coughing will also be reduced. You can also ask your child to consume frozen blueberries which will help numb the nerves in the throat and provide relief from chronic coughing. However you must refrain from using the blueberries in smoothies or other drinks since making a paste of the blueberries for addition in the smoothies will destroy the bioflavonoids.

Treatment For Xanax Addiction

Mar 8

Xanax also known as Alprazolam (2 mg) imprinted with gg249 is a drug that may be taken for legitimate purposes but it is also a widely abused drug. Benzodiazepine-type drugs like Xanax have long been known to have the potential to be addictive and must be taken with care so are often prescribed only for short periods. Sometimes, despite one’s best efforts to take that care, one can become addicted to Xanax.

Xanax can be prescribed as a prescription drug to reduce anxiety, to cause them not to worry about their problems, or to help them sleep. When abused, Xanax is often taken as part of a “cocktail” of drugs, for example, with Vicodin (hydrocodone, an opioid pain reliever) and Soma  (a muscle relaxant). The combination can be fatal and is certainly addictive.

Since Xanax is such a widely abused drug, many people may become addicted to Xanax after using it recreationally and then find that they cannot quit taking the drug without having problems with withdrawal symptoms.

Treatment for Xanax addiction is what makes it possible for both legitimate users and recreational users to leave this drug behind for good.

While the idea of treatment for Xanax addiction might cause some people to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed, the truth is that staying addicted to Xanax  is far more problematic than a treatment program would ever be.

When you decide it is time to stop taking Xanax or when you are trying to help a loved one stop, it’s time to find treatment for Xanax addiction. Without treatment, it can be very difficult to stop by oneself, especially if Xanax was being taken in conjunction with other drugs. It is critical not just to get off the drugs but to learn how to stay sober permanently. This can much more reliably be done with the support of the team at a good drug addiction treatment center. And getting off Xanax and any other drugs can be a life or death matter due to the threat of overdose or the combined effects of a “cocktail” of drugs.

The counselors talk to families like yours every day. It’s important to have some guidance at a time like this when crucial decisions are being made. The counselors have helped hundreds of people review drug rehab program features and make their best choice for the long term sobriety of themselves or their loved one. The process can be much faster when you have someone who understands the patterns of addiction, who know the pitfalls of helping the addicted person get started on a path to sobriety, and who can tell you what type of drug rehab program might best fit your situation.

What Is Bacterial Vaginosis and Why Home Remedies

Mar 8

Bacterial Vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria within the vagina. Under normal circumstances, the two main types of bacteria present within the vagina co-exist in harmony, with the “bad” bacteria (Gardnerella) being controlled by the friendly bacteria (Lactobacillus).

When something happens to upset the balance, the bad bacteria may grow to excess and the typical symptoms of bacterial vaginosis appear. The main symptom is a grayish discharge which has a foul, fishy odor and sometimes this is accompanied by itching and burning. Some women also experience symptoms similar to those of a urinary tract infection.

There is no one reason why women get bacterial vaginosis. Indeed the reasons are varied and will not necessarily be the same from one woman to another. Common reasons include over washing, douching, using a different washing detergent and a change in sexual partner. It is also thought that some women develop this condition when their resistance to immunity is low and they are “under the weather”. In addition, there are other numerous reasons, and one common culprit is antibiotics, which is ironic really as these are sometimes misguidedly given to treat BV.

How To Recognize Bacterial Vaginosis

It is completely normal for women to have a certain amount of discharge from the vagina. It acts as a kind of “barometer”, in that if you notice any changes in your discharge, it is a sign that something has changed within you, and this could be either positive or negative. Normal vaginal discharge helps to clean and moisten the vagina, keeping it healthy so you should not attempt to clean it constantly if the discharge is normal.

Most young girls will notice a discharge before they have their first period. Normal vaginal discharge is yellowish or white and cloudy. In some women it is odorless, but in others it can have a slightly acidic odor. The consistency can change throughout the menstrual cycle and can range from thick creamy white to almost clear and stringy-very similar to egg whites.

If the discharge has an offensive fishy smell, is thin and milk-like in consistency and a grayish white color, then it is likely to be bacterial vaginosis.

Other abnormal discharge could be a sign that something else is wrong. If it is yellow/green in color and of a heavy consistency with a bad odor, it could be Trichomoniasis. If it is white and of a cottage-cheese like consistency accompanied by intense itching but no odor, it is likely to be a yeast infection.

Natural Home Remedies For Bacterial Vaginosis

The very nature of bacterial vaginosis means that conventional treatments, such as antibiotics and over the counter remedies simply mask the symptoms and do not eradicate the root cause.

Antibiotics will kill the bacteria associated with BV but they have the unfortunate effect of killing off all bacteria present in the vagina. This includes the beneficial bacteria which, under normal circumstances, help to keep the harmful bacteria in check. So whilst the symptoms will initially be eradicated, once bacteria begins to naturally repopulate the vagina, the new strains of good bacteria will not be of sufficient strength to maintain good balance and so the symptoms will start again.

Did you realize that over 70% of women who take antibiotics for BV will suffer from at least one repeat attack within just a few short weeks?

This is why I only recommend natural home remedies for the condition. You need to learn how to prevent the condition occurring in the first place and how to quickly get rid of it naturally should you happen to get it again.

There is no doubt that the best way to treat bacterial vaginosis is by using strategies will enhance and strengthen the levels of good bacteria, thus ensuring that bad bacteria is never able to grow to a level where it causes the symptoms of BV. In addition, there are some very good natural cures which will eradicate the symptoms within minutes, and these feature in the Home Remedy treatments which I recommend.

Are Tonsil Stones Dangerous

Mar 8

Worried that tonsil stones are dangerous? Rest assured that these stones are not a danger. But, they come with a range of uncomfortable symptoms. These range from infection to embarrassing bad breath. As a result, most people seek to get rid of their tonsil stones quickly. Here are some of the symptoms that will alert you to the presence of tonsil stones – and why you should treat them promptly.

White Spots at The Back of The Throat

The most immediate, visual sign of tonsil stones is the appearance of ugly flecks of white at the back of the throat. Not only do these spots smell, but they have the power to terrify and nauseate the poor people who have to watch you yawn or laugh.

They are a combination of food and bacteria that calcify over time, forming hard, white dots that come to be known as tonsil stones. Although not life-threatening, small tonsil stones can irritate and cause mild forms of throat pain. This pain increases as the stones get larger, as does the risk of infection in the form of tonsillitis. People with large tonsil stones are recommended to visit their doctor or local Ear Nose and Throat therapist.

Bad Breath

Scientifically known as halitosis, this is probably the most socially problematic symptom of tonsils stones. It comes about because of the anaerobic bacteria within the stones themselves. This bacteria reproduces and creates sour-smelling complexes of sulphur, with emit nasty egg-laden aromas that have the power to chase most people away. Over seventy-five per cent of people suffering from bad breath have tonsil stones. Conditions like post-nasal drip, sinusitis and allergies result in dramatic overlays of bacteria in the throat, triggering tonsil stones and bad breath. It’s also possible to experience a metallic taste in your mouth with these stones.

Sore Throat, Swallowing Difficulties, Swelling

Sometimes, tonsil stones can rub up against each other. This can cause swelling and throat pain. These symptoms can also arise if the stones are lodged close to nerve endings and other sensitive parts of the throat. Chronic coughing and an unpredictable gag reflex may also result. If the stones are particularly large, eating and swallowing can be agonizing.

The flesh of the throat also tends to swell if the stones are large or if they catalyse the development of secondary infection. People with chronic swelling of the tonsils usually have their stones surgically removed. They may also opt for a permanent solution in the form of a complete tonsillectomy.

Vertigo and Ear Ache

Have you ever experience sensations of dizziness after a dip in the pool? Sometimes, water may get trapped in your ear, which in turn interferes with your sense of balance. This is because the water is placing pressure on your Eustachian tube, a vital organ for the maintenance of stability on your feet. Stones on the palatal tonsils are also very close to this tube and if they are large enough, may also interrupt its functioning. This makes dizziness another common symptom of tonsil stones. The nerves of the ear can also be affected by the pressure of tonsil stones, resulting in chronic sensations of ear ache.
